The following is a statement by Will County Democratic Central Committee Chair Burke Schuster and the Executive Board on the recent announcement that the Supreme Court has overturned Roe v. Wade:
The Supreme Court has issued a terrible decision that will affect the life and wellbeing of women across our nation. In overturning Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court has, for the first time, taken away a Constitutional right. It has made America less safe.
Illinois is on the front lines of supporting women and the right to choose, and I am proud to live in a state where our Democratic majority in the General Assembly has consistently reaffirmed the right – and no matter what the Supreme Court says, it is a right – to women’s health, to privacy, and respect for women under the law.
Yet there is more to be done. We must organize. We must be there for those who are suffering so much right now. And we must recognize that elections have consequences, including in the judiciary.
When the draft opinion leaked earlier this year, we listed all of the reasons why the Supreme Court was just plain wrong. We know it’s wrong. Now, it’s time to act.
Onward.
